"...nowhere on earth offers an experience quite like a holiday in Africa..."
Resort Information
Zanzibar is located in the Indian Ocean about 35km from mainland Tanzania, off the east coast of Africa. It includes the main island, whose actual name is Unguja Island, a coral island connected to the mainland by a shallow, submerged shelf, Pemba island to the north, as well as many other smaller islands and islets.
Zanzibar is as famous for its production of spices as it is for its spectacular aquamarine lagoons teeming with life, pristine coral reefs and palm fringed beaches. Although much of Zanzibar has become developed, there are still some unspoiled beaches left to explore. Zanzibar has a mainly Muslim society, evident in the exotic atmosphere and fascinating Islamic architecture of Stone Town. Pemba, however, is a laid-back island and offers a largely undiscovered culture, and some of the best diving in the world.
The waters surrounding the islands offer superb diving and snorkelling, with dive sites for all levels of ability. Diving sites around Zanzibar are ideal for beginner and immediate divers, although there are some challenging dives to be found near Levan Bank. The best dive sites are considered to be near Nungwi, in the north, and off the east coast, especially near Mnemba island.
The temperatures of Zanzibar are fairly constant year-round, averaging between 23 and 29°C, although sea breezes can make it seem cooler. The outlying reef, lining the east coast, forms a protective barrier resulting in a shallow sandy lagoon.
